In this article we’re going to review one of the most controversial concerts in pop rock history, the Renaissance Concert At Carnegie Hall.

One may wonder why this would be such a controversial concert. After all, Renaissance was not some drug induced band with a reputation for trashing venues. There was nothing offensive about their lyrics.

And yet, there were many people at the time who felt that Andrew Carnegie would be turning over in his grave if he knew that the art rock band Renaissance was going to be playing at the hall named after him. After all, Carnegie Hall was a place where only the greatest classical musicians got to play. This is where we heard the works of Chopin, Bach, Mozart and a number of other well known classical composers. This is where we heard the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. This is not where you hear the likes of Jon Camp, John Tout, Michael Dunford and Annie Haslam.

But here they were, in the summer of 1975 along with select members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra playing at Carnegie Hall. Many die hard classical music fans wondered if the New York Philharmonic had nothing better to do that day. What they didn’t realize is that they were about to be treated to something the likes of which would never be heard in those hallowed halls again.

Renaissance was, in every true sense of the word, the poor man’s classical music group. Their songs were very much styled after the classical composers of earlier times. But their sound was unmistakably rock. They combined guitars, drums, synthesizers and orchestral instruments to product a very unique sound that made them one of the most popular art rock groups of the time.

Unfortunately, at the concert itself Renaissance played it safe. They didn’t stray much from the original arrangements of their finely crafted tunes. Then when they did stray it was with a ridiculous five minute bass solo during “Ashes Are Burning” which surely had their die hard fans cringing. And the New York Philharmonic members who where there were pretty much just window dressing.

The concert wasn’t all bad though. It did introduce curiosity seekers to some of the great songs such as “Ocean Gypsy”, “Can You Understand”, their big hit “Carpet Of The Sun”, “Mother Russia”, “Ashes Are Burning”, and the epic masterpiece “Scheherazade.”

There isn’t much in this concert that you’re not going to hear on their studio albums. There is a short spoken introduction to Scheherazade, but it adds very little to the song itself other than to tell a little of the story.

The critics’ main problem with the concert was that a live performance is supposed to be a window in the soul of an artist. In this case all we were treated to was a regurgitation of what could have easily been found by simply buying one of their records.

On a positive note, those who never heard of Renaissance before were treated to some music that most definitely had every right to be performed at Carnegie Hall. They just could have done a better job of performing it.

I really love improvisations that go nowhere. Improvisations where there is no goal… just an impulse to follow emotions in the current moment.
In fact, some have described this type of music as self-indulgent – a type of musical fantasy world where the focus is more on the artist than the listener.
Of course, this is not the case at all. You see, most of us are used to having our music wrapped up in nice neat little packages.  we  aren’t used to actually listening to music.  we  expect an “emotional experience” right away. And it better happen in 3-4 minutes or else.
Take Japanese Shakahuachi music for example. For those of you who don’t know, the shakahuachi is a Japanese flute. It’s beautiful sound is appreciated by many in the East.
I’ve a few CDs of this music and everytime I listen to them I hear something new. It’s as if each time the CD  is played I hear it for the 1st time. It never gets old. Why? Because of the absence of musical form!
There is not much for the mind to grasp or hold onto. Repetition of musical phrases is al most non existent. Instead,  we  get music without goals!
Assuming that the re is a goal at all, it is that the individual performing the music remains in the present while playing. What  we  hear is the “state of mind” of the artist at the exact time the recording is made.
In one of my own piano pieces “Cirrus,” (listen to it at http://www.quiescencemusic.com) I do the same thing. And everytime I listen to it, it seems that it is somehow differ d. Yet the music always remains fresh and pliant – waiting to be found again and again.
Having said all of this, I’ve little against musical form and the works that come from it. I just think the “other” type of music is just as valid and vital

In this article we’re going to briefly review one of the most touching concerts that was ever held for another person, The Concert For George.

There are very few people in history who you can mention their first name, say the word concert and know exactly who that concert was for. The Concert For George was one of those concerts. George of course being the late George Harrison of the Beatles.

George Harrison died of brain cancer on November 29, 2001. One year later the memorial concert for this great musician was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It is only fitting that this was the place as Harrison was 100% English from the top of his head to the tips of his magical guitar fingers. Many feel he was the overlooked Beatle. Everything was about John and Paul. But most critics feel that George Harrison was the heart and soul of the Beatle’s guitar sound which has since be copied by so many artists.

The idea for the concert was George’s good friend Eric Clapton’s. Clapton and Harrison had actually been friends for a long time and first played together on the White Album. The song, of course, was “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Clapton put together a memorial that Harrison himself would have smiled at.

The concert began with the daughter of one of Harrison’s great friends, Ravi Shankar, singing “Your Eyes.” After this song the daughter, who’s name is Anoushka, teamed with another one of Harrison’s friends, Jeff Lynne of ELO fame, to sing “The Inner Light” which was one of George Harrison’s own tunes.

The concert itself was a mixture of music and comedy, which is very unusual for a concert. The comedy was handled mostly by the ensemble of Monty Python who, along with Tom Hanks, performed “Sit On My Face” and “The Lumberjack Song” which was one of Monty Python’s funniest and most famous tunes.

The rest of the concert featured more of George’s friends and the remaining members of the Beatles, Paul and Ringo. Also there were Tom Petty, Billy Preston, and Gary Brooker from Procal Harem. George’s son Dhani was also on hand. If you watch the video of the concert you would swear that Dhani was George Harrison if you didn’t know better.

The remainder of the concert featured mostly songs that were either done by The Beatles or songs that George had done solo or with other performers such as when he was with Tom Petty during his stint with The Traveling Willburys.

The songs are a who’s who of some of the greatest tunes these people ever did together or separately. They included such classics as George’s signature song “Something,” the Beatles’ like “Isn’t It A Pity,” “Here Comes The Sun,” a Ringo tune that George played on, “Photograph,” “All Things Must Pass,” “My Sweet Lord,” and finishing with “I’ll See You In My Dreams,” which was an appropriate ending for the concert.

George Harrison may be gone but he will never be forgotten.
